Custom Forging

Upset Forgings

Localized upsetting that increases cross-section right where a part needs it — forming integral heads, flanges, and collars on bar stock without welding or added material.

More metal exactly where the load is

Upset forging concentrates force along the axis of a heated bar, compressing and thickening a localized zone to increase its cross-section. That lets us grow an integral head, flange, collar, or shoulder directly out of the parent bar — no welded joint, no press-fit, no discontinuity in the grain.

Because the enlarged section is forged rather than assembled, the flow lines run continuously through the transition, giving upset components excellent strength right where they carry load or clamp. MTS Forge has produced upset work for drivetrain, valve, and fastener applications since 1986, all under documented ISO 9001:2015 control.

Process capabilities

  • Localized upsetting to increase cross-section on round and profiled bar stock
  • Integral heads, flanges, collars, and shoulders forged from the parent bar
  • Carbon, alloy, and stainless steels across a broad size range
  • Continuous grain flow through the upset transition for load-bearing strength
  • Single or multi-blow sequences engineered to the finished geometry
  • In-house heat treatment and rough machining to complete the part
  • ISO 9001:2015 registered process control and traceability

The advantages of forging it in one piece

Integral, not welded

Heads and flanges are forged from the bar itself — no weld line to inspect or fail.

Uninterrupted grain

Flow lines run continuously through the upset, keeping strength high at the transition.

Cross-section on demand

We add material precisely where the part needs it and leave the rest lean.

Material efficient

Redistributing the parent bar avoids the waste of machining a large section from solid.

Built for fatigue

Forged transitions stand up to the cyclic loads shafts and fasteners see in service.

Certified control

Every run is documented under our ISO 9001:2015 quality system.
